Intertemporal Consumption and Savings Behavior: Neoclassical, Behavioral, and Neuroeconomic Approaches

چکیده
This paper summarizes neoclassical, behavioral, and neuroeconomic models of intertemporal consumption and savings behavior. I summarize the construction and implications of Modigliani & Brumberg’s Life-Cycle Hypothesis [4] and Laibson’s quasi-hyperbolic consumption function [8] as background and motivation for Bisin & Benhabib’s neuroeconomic model of dynamic consumption behavior [3]. In particular, I focus on the mathematical construction of each model, their different behavioral assumptions of agent rationality, and the resulting implications for economic theory. 1 The Neoclassical Life-Cycle Hypothesis The development of modern economic theories analyzing intertemporal consumption began in the early 1950s with the publication of Modigliani & Brumberg’s Life-cycle Hypothesis (LCH) [4]. By making several arguably innocuous assumptions, Modigliani & Brumberg produce several important and non-trival predictions about macroeconomic processes such as the relationship in aggregate economics between savings and growth. Furthermore, since its construction, the LCH has served as the standard economic approach to the study of consumption and savings behavior and has served as a foundational basis for subsequent models of intertemporal consumption. The structure of the rest of this chapter is as follows: subsection 1.1 presents the theoretical foundations and assumptions of the LCH. Subsection 1.2 discusses some of the implications and results. Subsection 1.3 concludes the discussion on neoclassical models of intertemporal consumption and discusses several objections and limitations of the LCH.

Theoretical frameworks for neuroeconomics of intertemporal choice
Intertemporal choice has drawn attention in behavioral economics, econophysics, and neuroeconomics. Recent studies in mainstream economics have mainly focused on inconsistency in intertemporal choice (dynamic inconsistency); while impulsivity/impatience in intertemporal choice has been extensively studied in behavioral economics of addiction. However, recent advances in neuroeconomic and econop...
متن کاملAre assets fungible? Testing the behavioral theory of life-cycle savings
This paper is an empirical investigation of the behavioral life-cycle savings model. This model posits that self-control problems causes individuals to depart substantially from rational behavior. I show that this model can explain how the consumption of individuals at or near retirement vary with changes in different types of financial assets. Specifically, consumption spending is sensitive to...
متن کاملCultural neuroeconomics of intertemporal choice.
According to theories of cultural neuroscience, Westerners and Easterners may have distinct styles of cognition (e.g., different allocation of attention). Previous research has shown that Westerners and Easterners tend to utilize analytical and holistic cognitive styles, respectively. On the other hand, little is known regarding the cultural differences in neuroeconomic behavior. For instance, ...
متن کاملRules of Thumb in Life-cycle Savings Models
We analyze life-cycle savings decisions when households use simple heuristics, or rules of thumb, rather than solve the underlying intertemporal optimization problem. The decision rules we explore are a simple Keynesian rule where consumption follows income; a simple consumption rule where only a fraction of positive income shocks is saved; a rule that corresponds to the permanent income hypoth...
متن کاملInvestigation on Habit Formation, Risk Aversion and Intertemporal Substitution in Consumption of Iranian Households by GMM Approach
Consumption is the principal feature of Iranâs Gross National Production. Therefore, recognizing of factors that influence it is quite crucial. This article, investigates habit formation, durability, relative risk aversion and intertemporal substitution in consumption expenditures of Iranian households. For empirical study, at first, we constructed two weighted portfolio of the main assets re...
